The stump grinder we use is a Vermeer SC252.  While perhaps one of the most popular grinders in use today its relative small size makes grinding large stumps very time consuming.  Often we will forgo grinding large stumps (+30" diameter).

Recently we cut a pine tree having a relatively large trunk.  Using a chainsaw we were able to effectively limit how much grinding was actually done.  See the pictures below.
